Synopsis

Brief summary

Houshin Engi is roughly based on the classic Chinese novel of the same name. I haven't read the novel so I can't really say how closely Fujisaki-sensei's retelling of the story follows the original novel. But here's what the anime/manga is about:

The main character is Taikoubou, a training Doushi at the Kongrong Mountains. He is the direct disciple of Genshi Tenson, the head of all Sennin (the graduated version of Doushi) and Doushi at Kongrong. Taikoubou is sent to eliminate 365 Youkai Sennin on a list called the Houshin List as part of the Houshin Project. He is given a Paopei, Dashinben, and the spirit beast Suupuushan to help with this task

The motivation for the Houshin Project is to eliminate the Youkai that have contaminated the human world. Usually Sennin won't interfere with the affairs of humans, as they are more powerful and live longer. However, a Youkai Sennin called Dakki, has infiltrated the Imperial Court of Chuuou (the reigning emperor) and controlled his mind. At the beginning of the Houshin Project, the human world is suffering from poverty and corruption at then hand of Dakki.

Houshin Engi is the story and journey of Taikoubou in his quest to defeat Dakki and restore the human world of peace and prosperity.
